Job Summary

The purpose of the Maintenance Worker I is to perform general inside and outside building and grounds maintenance activities to include: cleans, sweeps, waxes, paints, performs carpentry and building repair duties; mows, trims trees, digs ditches and trenches; cleans and sweeps parking lots and surrounding areas.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

• Performs routine landscaping maintenance such as trimming trees, hedges, bushes and mowing lawns.
• Operates a variety of powered and hand operated machinery and equipment to facilitate maintenance and repair of police buildings.
• Performs grounds upkeep using weed eater, yard tools, and gas mower.
• Performs general inside cleaning and maintenance of Police buildings to Include: cleans, sweeps, waxes, dusts, empties trash, and performs minor building repairs.
• Paints, cleans parking lots and surrounding areas and generally maintains all Police facilities and grounds up to the standard of cleanliness and safety expected by the general public.
• Performs carpentry duties on Police facilities to include construction and repairs of existing furniture, shelving and other structures.
• Performs work in emergency situations as required.
• Performs related tasks as necessary.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED, or sufficient education to read and write with no experience. Six months of work related experience preferred.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License

Independence & Judgement

Minimal judgment; instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct and/or constant supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems.

Initiative & Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: not demanded to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Physical Demands

Mostly moderate and fairly steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 35-50 lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; use of a City vehicle.

Working Conditions

Frequent exposure to outdoor elements (several times per week).
