Job Summary
The Marketing and Special Events Coordinator is responsible for the creation, administration, and execution of a wide range of special events for patrons of all ages and abilities. This includes planning, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating all city-sponsored events such as grand opening ceremonies, dedications, First Fridays, weddings, the Market Square Tree Lighting Ceremony, CycloBia, Volunteer & Community Service events, and other private and public events held at Market Square. The position involves event development, promotion, securing event sponsorships, managing special contracts, and ensuring compliance with safety and risk management protocols for all activities, events, and organizations using City facilities. Additionally, this role includes issuing permits, proper paperwork, and billing for the finance department.
The Marketing and Special Events Coordinator will support the Downtown Revitalization Manager in the efficient operation of communications, marketing, advertising for businesses and events, public improvements, and activities within Downtown Brownsville. The candidate must be meticulously organized, adaptable, and passionate about producing work that people will love, whether it’s a social media campaign, reputation management, or public relations.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
• Prepares proper paperwork and billing for the finance department.
• Plans, schedules, supervises, and evaluates all city-sponsored events such as First Friday (FF) and other events in Downtown.
• Meets with Downtown Business owners for updates and events.
• Develops strategies and content plans, community management, influencer strategy, paid social media to promote Downtown Brownsville, events, in Downtown Brownsville, and work that the city is doing to benefit Downtown.
• Develops events, promotes, secures event sponsorships, manages special contracts, and ensures compliance with safety and risk management protocols for all activities.
• Performs related tasks as necessary.
Minimum Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree plus one year of experience, or high school graduation or GED plus five years of experience.
Special Certifications & Licenses
Valid Texas Driver’s License.
