Job Summary

The purpose of the class is to control pest or insect problems in order to avoid health diseases for the City of Brownsville. The class is responsible to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the community by implementing effective pest control measures and strategies in controlling mosquitoes and other insects, by fumigating, or via other effective removal (fumigation) protocols. The class works according to set procedures under direct supervision.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

· Knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment.
· Handles all calls from the public related to pest control or removal, bees and their elimination, and standing water, taking appropriate action in each case.
· Prepares and conducts year-round fieldwork.
· Preparation and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
· Fumigates, larvaciding and other product application means.
· Carries out pest control activities such as insecticide application, trapping, baiting, and the use of other pest control methods. Ensure the safe and proper handling, storage, and disposal of pest control products in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
· Prepares, compiles, and maintains vector breeding sources, inventory, GIS maps, and records.
· Searches land ownership, and works with property owners, community groups, and environmental groups to prevent and control vectors.
· Inspects and surveys a variety of properties, lands, and facilities to determine the presence of vectors such as mosquitoes, rodents, and other vectors.
· Monitors progress of vector control efforts.
· Collects and prepares insect specimens for testing.
· Use other techniques to eliminate mosquitoes and other insects.

· Prepare and submit regular reports on pest control activities (daily), including inspections, treatments performed, and results achieved. Maintain accurate records of pest control operations, including pesticide usage, inventory, and equipment maintenance.
· Utilizes different kinds of chemical or fumigation procedures.
· Share knowledge concerning vector control, pesticide usage, and mosquito borne diseases.
· Carefully follow directions and prescribed safety procedures
· Clean, store, and use equipment (including vehicles) properly.
· Conducts educational programs and awareness campaigns to educate the public about pests, their risks, and prevention measures. Collaborate with community organizations, schools, and residents to promote proactive pest management practices and encourage early reporting of pest-related concerns.
· Identification of mosquito specimens
· Obtain pesticide applicator license within eight months (8) of employment.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.
Minimum 15 semester hours from an accredited academic institution in entomology, microbiology, molecular biology, or related life science discipline.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Must obtain Texas Department of Agriculture Noncommercial Pesticide License within 8 months of initial hire date.

Average judgment: must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Level & Frequency of Outside Contact

Direct contact may be infrequent but may require considerable tact and courtesy when it does occur.

Physical Demands

Mostly moderate and steady active physical exertion; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Requires light to medium work that involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; responsible for handing out to and retrieving property/equipment from employees and keeping inventory; use of agency vehicle.

Working Conditions

Frequent travel associated with job; periodic situations that cause stress and tension in the execution of regular duties.
