Job Summary
The purpose of the class is to operate complex heavy equipment necessary in the maintenance, repair and upkeep of city facilities. The class is responsible for crew leadership, routine maintenance procedures, safe and effective loading and operation, and storage. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed; develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills
• Must be able to read, interpret and follow work orders and procedures as necessary.
• Operates specialized equipment, machinery or vehicles, such as trucks with hydraulic pumping equipment, Slope Mower, Brush Picker, and Backhoe, fork lift, bob cat with attachments, dump truck with class A license to be able to pull 100 foot stage and bleachers for events. Operates light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, rakes and brooms. Must be willing and able to work early morning shifts, weekends, and holiday shifts.
• Removes debris, litter, earth or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines; sets poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides and hillsides.
• Operates backhoe through assigned city areas and parks.
• Operates Slope Mowers mowing drain ditches throughout city limits.
• Operates dump truck through assigned routes and work order assignments including events during the year.
• Operates backhoe to scrape curbs to insure proper storm water flow throughout city limits.
• Operates dump truck with attached stage or bleachers for PARD and City events including: hands across the border, beer fest, fishing derby, and concerts etc.
• Inspects equipment keeping all city equipment and vehicles clean and washed and always complete pre-trip and post-trip to ensure safe operation.
• Operates light equipment and tools, such as blowers, edging tools, sprayers, shovels, mowers, rakes, and brooms.
• Removes debris, litter, earth, or pavement; loads material into trucks; locates and excavates underground structures or pipelines; sets poles; clears land or mows grassy areas, such as parks, playgrounds, medians, roadsides and hillsides.
• Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment and tools on a regular basis.
• Assembles and loads equipment, tools, materials and supplies according to daily work assignments.
• Follows COB and state and federal rules and regulations for the safe operation of equipment and machinery; reports accidents, equipment breakage, incidents and accidents, and unsafe conditions to a supervisor immediately.
• Determines amount and type of materials, equipment and/ or tools necessary to complete tasks; assigns work; supervises and instructs others.
• Completes routine documents and forms, such as work orders, repair requests, reports and logs.
Minimum Education & Experience
High school graduation or GED plus one year of experience.
Special Certifications & Licenses
Job requires a current, valid Texas Class A Commercial Driver’s License, as required by State Law for the operation of heavy machinery and trucks.

Average judgement; must recognize and resolve problems, type of procedure to apply, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established scheduled.

General guidelines: occasionally requires interpretation of available options to apply to non-standard situations; day-to-day work drives priorities.

Physical Demands
Considerable heavy muscular effort or exertion but not continuous or long sustained; demands more than ordinary strength or endurance; may require brief periods of heavy muscular exertion, such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 35-50 lbs. of force occasionally or a negligible amount of energy frequently to lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
Responsibility for Equipment & Property
Responsible for high-risk or valuable items, such as big, expensive equipment, including light and heavy machinery, plant equipment, multiple computers and computer networks, etc.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to outdoor elements; job often (several times per week) exposes person to physical danger; serious space problems; frequent situations that cause stress and tension in the execution of regular duties.
