Job Summary

The Communications and Multimedia Coordinator is an experienced multimedia journalist and communications professional responsible for developing, reporting, producing and delivering news and public information content for the City of Brownsville Communications and Marketing Department (CMD) and Brownsville TV (BTV). This position covers City Commission meetings, City events, programs, initiatives and highlights services, while gathering information through research, on-site reporting, interviews and direct engagement with City officials, staff, residents and community stakeholders. The Coordinator must understand how a newsroom operates and be able to take a story from assignment and research through reporting, writing, production and publication.

The position requires hands-on experience in social media content creation, digital journalism, television broadcasting, news reporting, news producing, and video production. Responsibilities include creating REELS/stories, writing broadcast scripts and news stories, conducting on-camera interviews, shooting and producing video packages, developing rundowns and segments, editing content, producing interviews, and adapting news content for digital and social media platforms. The Coordinator must exercise strong news judgment, verify information, meet deadlines and present complex municipal issues in a clear, accurate, engaging and accessible manner.

The successful candidate is a strong storyteller and communicator who can work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced communications environment. The position requires excellent writing, reporting, interviewing, research and multimedia production skills, along with professional judgment, ethical standards and attention to accuracy. The Coordinator must be comfortable working in the field, in a television studio, in an editing environment and across digital platforms while maintaining professionalism and building effective relationships with City departments, elected officials, residents, community partners and other stakeholders.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

• Identify newsworthy events and develop for daily reports, including media advisories, press releases, website news stories, social media content development, and news media pitches.
• Attend and report on events that are of interest to City residents.
• Interview City elected officials, leadership, employees, and public to create news stories and social media content.
• Gather and verify information regarding assigned stories through interviews and observation.
• Transcribing and summarizing City Commission Meetings and City events/programs for news production purposes.
• Develop/receive daily assignments or evaluate City news leads and news tips to develop story ideas for all news platforms.
• Compile and incorporate supplemental material and background information from a range of sources, such as files, reference libraries, and/or individual knowledgeable sources, as appropriate.
• Organize material, determine emphasis, and write story according to prescribed Associated Press editorial style and format standards.
• Work collaboratively with Communications and Marketing and BTV team to ensure proper coverage of City events.
• Represent the City at conferences, press briefings, events, and interviews.
• Ensure a professional appearance, language use, and manner throughout reports and events.
• Will edit, or assist in editing, all news content in print, digital, video and/or audios for release.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education & Experience

• Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Broadcast Television, Film Production, Communications, or related field.
• Requires a minimum of two years of television/production experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License.

Average judgment: must recognize and resolve problems such as bad grammar, type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, when to change or sharpen blade on mower, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for use of equipment/property such as office equipment, supplies, etc., which are used in office; use of city vehicle.
