Job Summary

The purpose of the class is to assist in the maintenance of City facilities. The class is responsible for maintenance of streets and roads, grounds, water and sewer facilities, and related maintenance tasks. The class works according to set procedures under direct supervision. The employee works according to set procedures under direct supervision and strictly adheres to all applicable state and local laws, regulations, safety rules, departmental policies, and procedures.

Key Functions/Knowledge/Skills

• Average skills; knowledge of commonly used work routines, rules, procedures, or operations; ability to use specialized equipment.
• Safely operates tools and equipment in all types of weather, or conditions. The job may include morning, evening, weekend, holiday, split, or other work schedules.
• Inspects and maintains streets and roadways, by repairing, cleaning, painting, installing/ repairing signs, repairing cave-ins and drains, and other related maintenance tasks.
• Performs routine landscaping maintenance such as trimming trees, hedges, bushes and mowing lawns.
• Maintains facilities, tools and equipment in a clean and neat appearance.
• Maintains buildings and structures following direction from the supervisor and/or manager. This might include, but not limited to, drywall repair, painting, installation of fixtures, pavement hot and cold patches, street signs and pavement markings. It also involves cleaning, washing, moping, sweeping, vacuuming, re-stocking supplies, etc.
• Operates a variety of powered and hand operated machinery and equipment to facilitate maintenance and repair of public facilities.
• Maintains streets and roadways free of trash, debris, and FOD (foreign object damage)
• Thoroughly inspects and performs daily equipment and tool inspections; reporting mechanical defects, needed repairs, and damage upon daily inspection.
• Complies with all State and local laws; Departmental policies, safety rules, and procedures.
• Reports hazardous and dangerous conditions in and around the facility, including incidents/accidents immediately.
• Operates had and power tools such as trimmers, vacuum sweepers, outdoor hand held power equipment and mowers.
• Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education & Experience

High school graduation or GED plus two years of experience.

Special Certifications & Licenses

Valid Texas Driver’s License

Average judgment; must recognize and resolve problems such as type of procedure to apply, where to refer call or correspondence without specified destination, when to change or sharpen blade on mower, whether there is a problem/malfunction with a piece of equipment that needs attention, etc.; may involve freedom in selection of work methods among approved routines, setting of priorities, or sequencing of tasks within established schedules.

Initiative & Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: not demanded to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Responsibility for Equipment & Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; use of a City vehicle.

Frequent travel associated with job; periodic situations that cause stress and tension in the execution of regular duties.
